We are in the consultation phase for the new Local Development Framework for St Albans – what used to be called the Structure Plan when I was small. Sites for supermarkets? Where could a new school go? Do we have to build on the Green Belt? The final document produced from this process will help define the answers.

There have been a number of local meetings to give residents the opportunity to hear straight from the horse’s mouth – or Chris Brazier and Robert Donald to give them their proper names. The one in the Homewood Road church hall in Marshalswick was particularly well attended, so was the meeting organised by the Sopwell Residents’ Association in the Marlborough Pavilion. Tonight I am going to the meeting for Colney Heath which is happening at the Charles Morris Hall in Tyttenhanger Green.

The Liberal Democrats also organised a “pasta and politics” evening (see photo above) where Cllr Melvyn Teare and Peter Trevelyan of the Civic Society talked about the complementary work being done to create a “City Vision” for the centre of St Albans. Do we move the City Museum? Where might a cinema go? Chould the chaotic and unsightly Drovers Way area be redeveloped to provide a new network of shopping streets? What happens to St Peters Street?

You can see a detailed exhibition of the City Vision work in one of the Maltings shop units opposite Costa Coffee until 26th September. The council’s website has all the documentation on the Local Development Framework – see it here.

It’s really important that local residents comment – either by downloading the questionnaire and filling it in, or by completing the survey on-line. The more involvement can be demonstrated, the more robust the plan will be when it comes to final approval by the Inspector. And if the plan clearly shows for example that London Road is not the right place for a giant Tesco superstore and that this has been endorsed by local residents, that will enormously strengthen the council’s hand.

I don’t always quote Conservative philosophers in my speeches. But I did quote Edmund Burke in my speech at the demonstration against the Helioslough freight terminal application organised by STRiFE outside the Alban Arena on Saturday. All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

There must have been a couple of hundred people there specifically for the rally – and then all the passers-by who were shopping at the French market.

I was pleased to be on the same platform as Roma Mills and Anne Main because there is nothing party political about this battle. We sink or swim together.

In summary I said (as I have said previously) that this proposal has perfectly horrible implications for Park Street and the villages but it is also a knife in the underbelly of St Albans.
In short I spoke about all the issues highlighted in my earlier blog on my formal letter of objection to the scheme. Now we have the hard work of mounting the technical arguments.

I hope to see lots of people at the St Albans District Council Planning Referrals Committee on Monday evening!

Fabulous Christmas lunch in Colney Heath – turkey and all the trimmings followed by Christmas pud. All put on for local pensioners and subsidised by the parish council. And then singing from Year 4 of Colney Heath JMI School as the icing on the cake.

Colney Heath has always struck me as community-spirited in the best sense – and today’s event at St Mark’s Parish Centre was a happy and jolly affair. The parish council subsidises the cost of the lunch. I am a big fan of parish councils – the best ones add true value to their communities and the councillors put in huge amounts of time and energy without remuneration. In many ways it is the most rewarding and flexible part of local government where it is easy to see the beneficial impact of often relatively small sums of money.

But today’s event was a tribute to volunteer effort – in the kitchen and also front of house. Hats off to everyone involved.

Afterwards James Spanner, vicar of St Mark’s, showed me progress on the new extension to the church – a handsome construction designed to complement the existing brick-built 1845 church. It is on schedule for completion next February and will help reinforce the church’s position at the centre of village life.
