The Secretary of State should re-open the Park Street Freight Terminal Inquiry

October 10th, 2011 · 1 Comment · Hands off Herts, Sandy's blog

As an individual objector at the Inquiry into the Park Street Freight Terminal, I was one of the “interested parties”  written to last month by the Department for Communities and Local Government asking for our views on how the Secretary of State, Eric Pickles, should respond to the High Court order quashing his refusal decision.
The [...]

Helioslough rightly under pressure as public has their say at the Inquiry

December 3rd, 2009 · 2 Comments · Hands off Herts, Sandy's blog

Today was the first opportunity for members of the public to give evidence as witnesses at the Railfreight public inquiry.  It was a good morning.  Anne Main spoke first and concentrated on rail issues and particularly the disgraceful failure of Network Rail to provide a witness to the Inquiry who could be questioned and cross-examined [...]

As new railfreight inquiry begins, have we uncovered a fundamental flaw in Helioslough’s traffic modelling?

November 24th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Hands off Herts, Sandy's blog, Uncategorized

Today was the first day in the new Public Inquiry into developer Helioslough’s appeal against St Albans District Council’s refusal of their application to build a massive freight terminal with a few railway sidings attached in the crucial Green Belt south of the city.
I joined the demonstration organised by STRiFE beforehand and then we all [...]

Stabbed in the front by Herts County Council

October 28th, 2009 · No Comments · Hands off Herts, Sandy's blog

I am frankly dismayed by Hertfordshire County Council’s decision not to make any highways-related objection to the Helioslough freight terminal application.  It looks like they have just caved in to Helioslough’s legal threats.  It is totally abject for them to cite concern about costs being awarded against them – of course there is [...]

Where do we go from here?

September 15th, 2009 · No Comments · Hands off Herts, Sandy's blog

We are in the consultation phase for the new Local Development Framework for St Albans – what used to be called the Structure Plan when I was small.  Sites for supermarkets?  Where could a new school go?  Do we have to build on the Green Belt?  The final document produced from this process will help [...]

Over 1200 against, one or two for – it can only be one thing

July 20th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Hands off Herts, Sandy's blog

Those were the letters sent to St Albans District Council in connection with Helioslough’s second application to build the freight terminal. Tonight’s meeting of the St Albans Planning Referrals Committee duly threw the application out No real surprise there.
The big new news is the opposition of the Association of Train Operating Companies [...]

Cathedral like a beacon on a hill – the view that could be lost for ever

July 1st, 2009 · 1 Comment · Hands off Herts, Sandy's blog

I have sent in my personal letter of objection to the Helioslough proposals for the Radlett freight terminal. I hope I am among many, many local residents and organisations to have voiced our dismay.
There are so many different grounds why this proposal is wholly unsuitable for the site -

“coalescence” of currently separate communities destroying [...]

St Albans and the Helioslough dragon

April 16th, 2009 · No Comments · Hands off Herts, Sandy's blog

As we always knew they would, Helioslough are back with a repeated application to build their monster freight terminal.
It’s a kick in the teeth for local people. St Albans Council still needs to see the detail of the application to check that it fits the rules. If it really is unchanged from the previous application [...]

There is an alternative railfreight site

April 6th, 2009 · No Comments · Hands off Herts, Sandy's blog

The key foundation of Helioslough’s resubmitted application to build the giant freight terminal at Park Street is their allegation that there is no alternative site for a so-called strategic freight terminal in this quadrant of London. We have to prove them wrong.
That is why local LibDem peer Tom McNally and I went with STRiFE [...]

The Government gives two-finger salute to St Albans

May 12th, 2008 · No Comments · Hands off Herts, Sandy's blog

As if we needed any further evidence, the self-styled ‘listening Prime Minister’ does not listen.
All the campaigning and representations against the vastly overblown housing demands being made on our district and county by the proposed “Regional Spatial Strategy” have been ignored.
Thousands of local residents signed the Hands Off Herts e-petition and paper petitions too – [...]
