Minister for Forked Tongues

July 23rd, 2013 · No Comments

Conservative Secretary of State Eric Pickles has just delivered an astonishingly two-faced speech to this year’s annual conference of the Royal Town Planning Institute.
He said:
You can plan for growth but not at any price.
So we have been very clear that we must have secure safeguards to protect the green belt.
That vital green lung which prevents [...]

“SANDY FOR ST ALBANS SOUTH!”

April 5th, 2013 · No Comments

I feel very privileged that the Liberal Democrat members in Sopwell and Verulam have asked me to be the Liberal Democrat candidate for St Albans South in the Herts county council elections on May 2nd.  Having narrowly missed being elected to Parliament, I will be honoured to serve at least part of the constituency in [...]

Park Street Freight Terminal: Two Councils, Two Petitions

January 19th, 2013 · 1 Comment

In my previous blog post, I described the huge support for the STRiFE petition to the county council asking them to neither sell nor lease to Helioslough the land they own at the Radlett Aerodrome site in Park Street.  (My understanding is that the Earl of Verulam owns a significant part of the proposed site [...]

Huge turn-out for STRiFE petition photocall

January 6th, 2013 · 2 Comments

There was a gratifyingly large turn-out in this morning’s mist and gloom for the photo-call to promote STRiFE’s petition to  Hertfordshire County Council not to sell or lease its land to Helioslough for the freight terminal.  Hats off to Cathy Bolshaw and the STRiFE team for being so proactive.
I was joined by Liberal Democrat councillors [...]

A terrible Christmas present for St Albans

December 21st, 2012 · 2 Comments

Today’s sneak announcement from Eric Pickles that after all he is minded to approve the Helioslough freight terminal is truly terrible news.  Nothing has changed in terms of the inappropriateness of this site.  It’s going to mean misery for residents in Park Street, Colney Heath and the south of St Albans district.  Commuters will suffer [...]

Shock Pickles decision: No new Public Inquiry into Park Street freight terminal

December 14th, 2012 · No Comments

I am still getting my head round the implications of the letter e-mailed to me this afternoon from the Department for Communities and Local Government stating that Eric Pickles “has concluded that it is unnecessary for him to re-open the inquiry into the Radlett appeal and conjoin it with the planned inquiry into the Colnbrook [...]

Helioslough latest: Secretary of State announces another Public Inquiry

September 19th, 2012 · 1 Comment

I and my Liberal Democrat colleague David Parry were slagged off left and right when we suggested last autumn that the only way forward in terms of preventing the Helioslough Freight Terminal would be to hold a new Public Inquiry, thus allowing substantial new facts on the ground to be considered.
We argued that otherwise the [...]

Park Street Freight Terminal – A tale of two ministers

July 30th, 2012 · 2 Comments

I am very pleased to reproduce the above letter.  A really pathetic attempt by local Conservatives to smear Vince Cable as a supporter of and secret lobbyist for the Park Street freight terminal has backfired spectacularly.
As I have written previously, Conservative Party links to Helioslough were exposed when it was revealed that Simon Hoare, the [...]

Lessons for the Park Street freight terminal decision from the BSkyB scandal

April 25th, 2012 · No Comments

“It’s time for deputy heads to roll” was the excellent joke on today’s BBC World at One as they reported the resignation of Jeremy Hunt’s special adviser over his wholly inappropriate links with the Murdoch empire in the middle of a quasi-judicial process to determine the outcome of News Corp’s proposed takeover of BSkyB.
Certainly it [...]

Disturbing evidence of private lobbying through Conservative channels for Park Street freight terminal

April 3rd, 2012 · 4 Comments

Further to my recent posting about the delay in the final decision on the Park Street freight terminal, there is worrying new evidence of private lobbying through Conservative channels in favour of the proposal.  In response to a parliamentary question tabled by Hertsmere MP James Clappison, Minister of State at the Department for Transport Theresa [...]
