I found myself with a walk-on part in tonight’s Ovo production of Measure for Measure at the Maltings. Not a play I had ever seen or read before. My part of Master Fresh was not arduous. I just had to stand on the stage and look gormless while quick repartee flew around me – so no change there then.
The play is certainly thought-provoking, raising issues about sexual morality and law enforcement which could have come straight from Sharia law. Men don’t emerge at all well as liars and sexual predators – even the Duke exercising droit de seigneur at the end.
I have to say that the Maltings Theatre isn’t a great advert for St Albans culture. It’s not their fault but being stuck up the car park stairs at the back of a shopping centre doesn’t offer a great front of house. And Francesca reported that the ladies’ loos were dire – dirty, used pregnancy test kits and other rubbish.
If St Albans is serious about becoming recognised as a cultural centre, it will have to do better than this.
